Where to find the castle

Lichtenberg Castle (Castello Montechiaro) sits at 1,020 m above the hamlet of Lichtenberg near Prad am Stilfserjoch – one of the most beautiful medieval fortifications in South Tyrol, freely accessible with panoramic views across the entire Vinschgau valley.

The ruin is open year-round and free of charge. Marked hiking trails lead from Prad, Glurns and Lichtenberg to the castle. Sturdy footwear and sufficient water are recommended.

Via the SS41 to Prad am Stilfserjoch, then towards Lichtenberg. Parking at the village church, then 45 min. on foot.

Vinschgau Railway to Spondinig, then bus to Prad. Information from SAD South Tyrol.

The castle ruin can only be reached on foot. Several hiking trails lead from different starting points directly to the castle.

Shortest and most direct route to the castle. Trail No. 9 from Prad, gentle ascent, ideal for families.
