Hans was a simple farmer from the little village of Lichtenberg, high up in Tyrol. One morning, while leading his cattle up to the castle, he heard a soft trickling behind an old stone wall. Curious, he pushed aside the moss and discovered a hidden spring! The water was crystal clear and wonderfully cool. When his old horse drank from it, it suddenly leapt around like a young foal again. Hans knew immediately: this spring was something very special! Instead of keeping the secret to himself, he ran to the village and shared it with all the Lichtenberger. Since then, the spring has been called "Hans's Well" – and they say it still helps sick animals to this day.
Once upon a time, in Tyrol, there was a castle…
On a high rocky cliff in Tyrol – which once belonged to Austria – a castle has stood for over 800 years. Its name is Lichtenberg Castle. The local people are called "die Lichtenberger". When you stand before it and look at the old walls, you can imagine Tyrolean knights in shining armour, ladies in beautiful gowns, farmers in the fields and children playing in the courtyard. Exciting, isn't it?

The Counts of Tyrol build the castle
Brave men in the service of the Counts of Tyrol built the castle on a high cliff. They wanted to protect the valley and had a huge view over all of Tyrol from up there!
The first written name
For the first time, the castle was mentioned in an old Tyrolean document. A knight named Rupert received it as a gift. The place was already called Lichtenberg – "bright mountain" in old German!
The neighbouring castle: Churburg
Did you know that the neighbouring castle, Churburg in Schluderns, is one of the best preserved medieval castles in all of Tyrol? The knights of Lichtenberg and Churburg were close friends – and sometimes funny rivals in playful contests!
Beautiful frescoes are painted
In Lichtenberg Castle, beautiful frescoes were painted about the dwarf king Laurin. Today these pictures are in a museum in Innsbruck, Austria – where all of Tyrol once belonged.
The Khuen-Bélasi and the chapel
A wealthy Tyrolean family, the Khuen-Bélasi, loved the castle very much. They built a little chapel inside it. They took care of the castle for many, many years.
The Lichtenberger save the castle
Many kind people, especially the Lichtenberger, joined together to save the old castle. They founded a society and have been working ever since to make sure the walls don't collapse.

What was life in the castle like in the Middle Ages?
🛡️ Putting on armour
Up at dawn! Knights wore heavy iron armour. The helmet alone weighed 3 kg.
🏹 Archery
Every day knights trained with bow, sword and horse. It took many years!
🏰 In the great hall
In the great hall everyone ate together: bread, roast meat and cider. No forks – with hands!
🔦 Night watch
At night a Tyrolean guard watched over the valley with a torch in hand.
The Legend of King Laurin
The magic garden
King Laurin was a tiny dwarf king with magic powers. His treasure was a garden of red roses, hidden in the Tyrolean mountains.
The great duel
Knight Dietrich of Bern entered the garden and challenged Laurin. Laurin had a magic invisibility cloak – but Dietrich was cleverer!
Painted on the walls
Painters depicted this story on the castle walls. Today the famous frescoes are in the museum in Innsbruck, Austria.
