Lichtenberg Castle Ruin – a thousand stories
Above the picturesque hamlet of Lichtenberg, overlooking Prad am Stilfserjoch in the Vinschgau valley, rises one of Tyrol's most captivating medieval castles on a rocky spur at 1,020 m above sea level — the Castle of Lichtenberg. Founded around 1200, it was the stage for over 800 years of power struggles, courtly life, legends and artistic culture.
The famous wall paintings depicting the legend of dwarf king Laurin — now housed at the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck — make the Castle of Lichtenberg a cultural monument of European importance. The legendary Khuen-Bélasi family ruled the castle for over three centuries, leaving an indelible mark on the region.
Lichtenberg Castle is freely accessible year-round and reachable on foot in about 30 minutes from Prad am Stilfserjoch. From the panoramic vantage point, you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the entire Vinschgau valley — from the Ortler peak to the Rätikon ridge.
